The Math Behind It

This tool uses USDA nutrient data expressed as milligrams of iron per 100 g of cooked turkey. To standardize your portion, ounces are converted at 28.3495 g per ounce and pounds at 453.592 g per pound. The iron content is then scaled proportionally:

Iron (mg) = serving size (g) × iron per 100 g ÷ 100
% Daily Value = iron (mg) ÷ 18 mg × 100

Because the values are linear, a 150 g serving of dark meat provides 3.0 mg — exactly 1.5 times the 2.0 mg per 100 g base. The 18 mg reference amount is the adult Daily Value used on Nutrition Facts labels in the United States.

Worked Example

A 6 oz (170 g) serving of cooked dark meat turkey: 170 ÷ 100 × 2.0 = 3.4 mg iron, about 19% of the Daily Value. The same portion of white/light meat: 170 ÷ 100 × 0.9 = 1.53 mg, roughly 9% DV. A 3 oz (85 g) serving of ground turkey: 85 ÷ 100 × 1.4 = 1.19 mg, about 7% DV.
