How It Works: Formula Explained
The calculation is based on the nutrient content per 100 grams of food:
- Protein (g) = (protein per 100 g ÷ 100) × total grams
- Cholesterol (mg) = (cholesterol per 100 g ÷ 100) × total grams
- Total grams = serving amount × number of servings (with ounces converted as 1 oz = 28.35 g)
- % Daily Value = cholesterol ÷ 300 mg × 100
- Cholesterol per 10 g protein = (cholesterol ÷ protein) × 10
The 300 mg reference comes from the U.S. FDA’s Daily Value for cholesterol on nutrition labels.
