How the Estimate Works
The calculator uses the metabolic equivalent (MET) approach from the Compendium of Physical Activities. One MET is roughly the energy cost of sitting quietly, and heavy resistance training typically scores between 3.5 and 6.0 METs depending on how hard the sets feel. The 3.5 in the formula is the standard oxygen uptake of one MET in millilitres per kilogram of body weight per minute, and the 200 converts that into calorie units.
