How the Calculation Works

The calculator sums the potassium from the base curry and any added ingredients:

Total potassium (mg) = (curry K per 100g × curry weight in g / 100) + sum(ingredient K per 100g × ingredient weight in g / 100)

It then expresses the result per 100 g of the total eaten weight and as a percentage of the Daily Value:

  • Potassium per 100g = total potassium ÷ total weight × 100
  • % DV = total potassium ÷ 4700 mg × 100

Example: You eat 250 g of chicken curry (230 mg/100g) with 50 g of cooked spinach. Base potassium = 2.5 × 230 = 575 mg. Spinach adds 0.5 × 466 = 233 mg. Total = 808 mg, and total weight = 300 g. Per 100 g = 808 ÷ 300 × 100 = 269 mg. % DV = 808 ÷ 4700 × 100 = 17.2%.

Factors That Affect Accuracy

Restaurant curries vary even more than homemade ones. A sauce-heavy curry with extra coconut milk or cream will be less potassium-dense, while extra tomato purée, potatoes, spinach, or lentils push it higher. Salt does not change potassium content, but it does change sodium, so keep them separate in your tracking.

  • Cooking method matters: if vegetables are boiled and the water is drained, some potassium is lost to the water.
  • Whole spices contribute negligible potassium compared with the main ingredients.
