Formula Explained

This calculator uses the standard metabolic equivalent, or MET, approach. One MET is roughly the energy your body burns while sitting quietly. During exercise, a MET value above 1 represents how many times harder you are working compared with rest.

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200

The 3.5 represents typical oxygen consumption in milliliters per kilogram per minute at rest, and the 200 converts that figure into calories. Once the per-minute burn is known, the total is simply multiplied by the number of minutes spent lunging.

Worked Example

A 70 kg person walks lunges at a moderate 4.5 MET effort with a pace of 12 min/km over 1 km. Time is 12 minutes. Calories per minute = 4.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 5.51 kcal. Total burn = 5.51 × 12 = 66.1 kcal. With a 0.8 m stride, the approximate lunge count is 1000 ÷ 0.8 = 1,250 steps.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

Remember: MET values are population averages, not individual measurements. Your actual burn can differ by 20–30 percent or more depending on your fitness level, muscle mass, speed consistency, and terrain.

Lunges on flat, firm ground burn less than lunges on grass, sand, or an incline. Pausing between steps lowers the average effort, while continuous, fluid steps raise it. The lunge count is also an estimate: taller people naturally take longer strides, and shorter people may need more steps per kilometer.
