How the Calculation Works
Converting a label value to sugar per 100 g is a simple proportion:
Sugar per 100 g = (sugar in serving ÷ serving size) × 100
For example, if a 60 g training treat contains 3 g of sugar, the calculation is (3 ÷ 60) × 100 = 5 g per 100 g. Before this formula runs, the tool converts both values into grams: ounces are multiplied by 28.35, and teaspoons of sugar are multiplied by 4.2, since one level teaspoon of granulated sugar weighs about 4.2 g. Normalizing the units first matters, because mixing units — ounces of product with teaspoons of sugar, for example — would silently corrupt the result.
The rating bands follow the same style of thresholds used on human food labels: under 5 g per 100 g is low, 5 to 10 g is moderate, and above 10 g is high. There is no formal regulatory cut-off for sugar in dog food, so these bands are a practical shopping guide rather than a legal standard.

Example 1 — Dental chew. A dental stick weighs 12 g and contains 0.8 g of sugar. The result is (0.8 ÷ 12) × 100 = 6.7 g per 100 g, which sits in the moderate band. The stick looks harmless on its own, but at 6.7 g per 100 g it delivers roughly 79 g of sugar per kilogram of treats.
Example 2 — Fruit-based training treat. A 5 g mini treat contains 0.5 g of sugar. That works out to (0.5 ÷ 5) × 100 = 10 g per 100 g, right at the boundary of the high band. Tiny serving sizes can hide a concentrated sugar load, which is exactly why per-100 g comparison is useful.

Daily Context: The 10% Rule

The sugar budget applies the common guideline that treats should make up no more than about 10% of daily calories. Since sugar provides roughly 4 kcal per gram, the budget is (maintenance energy × 0.10) ÷ 4. For a 12 kg dog with average activity, RER is about 70 × 6.45 = 451 kcal, maintenance energy is about 632 kcal, and the daily treat-sugar budget is about 15.8 g. One high-sugar treat can eat up a third of that budget in seconds.
Tip: The 10% guideline applies to all treats combined, not just sugary ones. If your dog already receives several treats a day, count every one against the same daily budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does sugar in dog food come from added sweeteners? Usually not. Most sugar in commercial dog food and treats is naturally present in ingredients such as fruit, sweet potato, beet pulp, or grains. Some products do add syrups, honey, or molasses as flavor enhancers or binders, but labels are not always required to separate added from naturally occurring sugar.
Is sugar toxic to dogs? Ordinary table sugar is not directly toxic the way xylitol is, but regular excess can contribute to obesity, dental disease, and blood-sugar swings. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol found in some sugar-free gums, candies, and peanut butters, is highly toxic to dogs and must be kept completely out of reach.
