How the Estimate Is Calculated

The calculator applies the standard metabolic equation used widely in exercise science: kilocalories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200. The 3.5 represents average resting oxygen consumption of 3.5 milliliters of oxygen per kilogram per minute, and the divisor 200 converts that oxygen consumption into kilocalories. A MET (metabolic equivalent of task) of 1.0 equals sitting quietly, so a MET of 3.0 means the activity requires about three times resting energy expenditure.

Once the per-minute burn is known, it is multiplied by the session duration in minutes. The calculator performs unit conversions automatically: pounds are converted to kilograms using 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, and hours to minutes by multiplying by 60.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Steady backyard catch. A 70 kg adult plays catch for 30 minutes at MET 3.0.

These examples show how the same person burns noticeably more by raising either intensity or duration. Doubling the MET at a fixed duration doubles the estimate, and doubling the duration doubles it as well.

Factors Affecting Accuracy & Limitations

MET values are population averages, not personal measurements. Your actual calorie burn depends on body composition (muscle tissue burns more energy than fat at the same weight), the distance you cover retrieving balls, whether you throw overhand or underhand, the weight of the ball or disc, ambient temperature, and how continuously you move between throws. A casual game with long standing breaks will fall below the MET estimate, while a high-energy game with constant movement can exceed it.

Track several sessions and compare the per-minute figures to learn your typical range. For more individualized precision, a heart-rate chest strap or wrist monitor gives a better personal estimate, but the MET approach remains useful for planning and logging. Can I use this for frisbee, football, or fetch with a dog? Yes. Any throw-and-catch activity fits the same metabolic equation; choose the MET that best matches the movement involved. A dog fetch game with walking between throws is usually around MET 2.5–3.0.

Why does switching from lb to kg not change the calorie result? Because the calculator converts pounds into kilograms before the calculation, the final number is identical; only the input unit you see changes.
